Financial support available for health insurance premiums, copayments and incidental medical expenses for eligible patients
ORLANDO, Fla., January 8, 2018 — The Assistance Fund, an independent charitable patient assistance foundation that helps patients and families facing high medical out-of-pocket costs, today announced the launch of a program to provide financial support to patients with atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aHUS). The new fund will assist individuals with out-of-pocket medical expenses associated with their condition and treatment, including copayments and coinsurance, health insurance premiums and incidental medical expenses.
“I am pleased to announce that The Assistance Fund has launched the Atypical Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome Financial Assistance Program to help eligible patients cover medical expenses related to this disease,” said Mark P. McGreevy, President, The Assistance Fund. “Individuals with atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome can require care from a diverse range of healthcare professionals, including pediatricians or general internists, nephrologists, hematologists and other specialists. With support from this fund, we hope that more patients can access the care that they need.”
Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a disease that causes platelets to clog up blood vessels, affecting the kidney’s ability to properly filter fluids and waste products from the body. As a result of the blood clot formation, people with atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome experience kidney damage and acute kidney failure that lead to end-stage renal disease in about half of all cases. The condition can occur at any age and is estimated to affect 1 in 500,000 people per year in the United States.1
“Atypical HUS is a chronic and life-threatening disease that is only manageable through treatment, and being able to access these treatments can truly make a difference between life and death for a patient,” said Anne Bruns, Caregiver to her aHUS son and Former Executive Director of the Atypical HUS Foundation. “We are grateful for The Assistance Fund and their support of atypical HUS. With this help, patients can receive treatment without the financial burden and stress that accompanies high out-of-pocket medical costs.”
